These numbers 192.168.1.1 may not strike a chord to the people who have yet to understand what this number string means. For most people, these are just a series of numbers punctuated by dots but somehow has got to do with the internet.
What an IP Address Is
But to those who are familiar with the internet, they can readily identify that this string of numbers represents an internet protocol or IP address. If you are not aware of what an IP address is, 192.168.1.1 is an example of an IP address and how it looks like.
You can compare an IP address to your identification card. Your ID serves as your identifier and represents who you are. In the same manner, an IP address identifies a computer, a network, or devices that communicate with one another on the internet.
The IP As a Default Address
The IP address of 192.168.1.1 is often used as an IP address of certain home broadband routers. Specifically, this IP is designated as the default address of Linksys routers. This identifies the router in the network and used to communicate in the internet.
As a default IP address of Linksys, entering this number on the address bar of your web browser will lead you to your router’s configuration web page regardless of your internet connection and as long as your router and your computer is connected via the Ethernet (the cable should be attached to both your router and your computer).
The Importance of the Default IP Address
It is through the default IP address that you will be able to initially setup your wireless broadband configuration. As you access your router’s configuration menu through the default IP of 192.168.1.1, and provide your credentials, user name and password, as necessary, you’ll be able to adjust the settings of how you are going to connect to the internet through your Linksys router.
Another importance of the default IP address is when you need to reset your password, the default IP is what you are going to use to access the configuration page. If there is no way that you can recover your lost or forgotten password, your option is to do a hard reset of your router to revert the settings to default or factory settings.
Use the Default to Increase Your Protection
Since your default IP address allows you to access the configuration menu of your wireless broadband router connection, use it to increase your protection and privacy. Once logged into your configuration page, go to the password settings and change it from its default of ‘admin’ to a password that is hard for others to decode. This will prevent unauthorized users to mess up with your configuration settings.
It is also necessary, if you value your privacy and security, to enable other encryption features of your wireless broadband router connection such as the WPA or WEP and create a strong passphrase key to prevent the rogues from attacking your connectivity. This ability to encrypt your connection is facilitated by your Linksys router’s default IP of 192.168.1.1.
